Ms. Callahan's 2nd Grade
READING
Reading Month was a success in our classroom. Most students participated, striving to read 20 minutes every night at home. Congratulations to Tatiana, our top reader totaling 52 books read during March. Please continue to have your child read at least 20 minutes every day as part of their daily homework routine.
MATH
In math, we have started working on fractions. Time and money are the next major units we will cover in math before the end of the school year. Additionally, I will send home multiplication and division work as well as addition and subtraction work as enrichment. This extra work, with your support, will prepare them for the third grade. We will continue to do spiral reviews in Math daily over all the material we have covered this year.
PRINTING/WRITING
In printing we are working on proper formation, spacing, and neatness. Some second graders will be introduced to cursive next week, if they have mastered printing. Children are required to use proper punctuation in all of their work. We are working really hard on our writing here at school. Please support your child and have them practice their spelling words by writing them in complete sentences. They should be forming complete sentences in their daily writing at home also.
Other News
We have several exciting activities coming up here as this school year comes to an end. We are very busy writing stories for the Langston Hughes Writing Contest next month. We are also working on a science fair project involving evaporation and sunlight. Finally, we are looking forward to starting our Passport to Africa projects toward the end of April.
Additionally, we will have two more school field trips before the end of the school year. We are excited to travel to Kalamazoo and see the amazing animals at Binder Park Zoo. More information to follow soon on both field trips. The last field trip is a school-wide surprise!!!
Several students have been selected to participate in the spelling bee at Michigan State University. All the sign up information has been sent home. Join us at the Kellogg Center Auditorium on May 8, 2010 at 10:45 am to support our students. Go Panthers!
